ALPHONSE MUCHA [ECLAT DU JOUR.] 1899. 40 1/2x14 inches. (103 x 36 cm.) Condition A: trimmed bottom margin. Framed. "Daybreak" is one of the four images from the Times of Day series. "The borders are worked out in such an exquisite pattern that each picture appears to be mounted in an elaborate frame of its own, or else seen through a decorated window" (Rennert/Weill p. 232). In fact, on each panel the borders are identical, providing the set with an inherent cohesiveness, however, Mucha brilliantly adds an additional flourish by presenting different floral patterns behind each border. These images were so popular they appeared in a number of variations, mostly with the individual titles printed beneath the bottom margin. Often, for aesthetic reasons these titles have been cut off, and it is not unusual to see these images without the bottom text. Rennert/Weill 62, Wine Spectator 77.
